Grey rock is for contact that cannot be ended — shared children, shared work, shared care of a relative. The aim is to be uninteresting: brief, factual, unreactive. It is a tactic for specific exchanges, not a way to live.

Use it when

Contact is unavoidable and each exchange currently costs hours of recovery.

Do not use it when

There is physical risk (safety planning comes first), or as the long-term posture in every relationship — it flattens the client too.

It works because provocation depends on a response, and it fails when it is improvised in the moment, which is why this worksheet is written in advance while the client is steady. The page starts by defining the contact that legitimately has to stay open, the subjects that genuinely need discussing, and the subjects that are no longer discussed. The client then writes four scripts: a logistics reply, a reply when provoked, a reply when flattered or offered the good version of the relationship, and how they end an exchange. How to use it

Separate must from optional
Only contact with a real reason stays open. Most clients keep more channels than necessary.

Write the four scripts
Logistics, provoked, flattered, and ending. Short sentences, no explanation, no new information.

Rehearse out loud
Read them aloud in session. Written scripts that have never been spoken do not survive the moment.

Name the bait
Tick the hooks that reliably work, and plan the first ten minutes after each.
