About this worksheet

An emotional flashback is a sudden return to the feeling state of an earlier traumatic time with no image, memory or narrative attached. Nothing replays; instead the shame, terror, abandonment or smallness of the original situation arrives at full original strength in the middle of an ordinary day, and the mind then attaches whatever present-day reason is nearby — a tone, a silence, a delayed reply. Pete Walker described these as the hallmark of complex PTSD, and they are routinely missed in assessment precisely because there is nothing to point at: clients conclude they are unstable or too sensitive rather than that they are flashing back. This worksheet makes the experience recognisable. It first sets the classic flashback and the emotional flashback side by side in plain language, then works one recent episode end to end: the situation in roles rather than names, the trigger as small as it actually was, the feeling in one or two words, peak intensity on a 0–10 scale, roughly how old the client felt on the inside, the conclusion they drew about themselves while it was happening, and how long the return took. It closes on the correction — what is true about now that was not true then, and the sentence the client wants to be able to say next time. The size of the reaction is the diagnostic clue: when it dwarfs the event, the size belongs to the past.

How old a person feels internally during a flashback, usually far younger than their actual age.
Example — A 40-year-old reporting they felt about seven while it was happening.

When to use it

Complex PTSD and developmental trauma, especially where reactions are disproportionate to their triggers.
Clients who describe themselves as too sensitive, unstable or dramatic and cannot say what the episodes are about.
Psychoeducation early in stabilisation, before flashback management skills are rehearsed.
Alongside the triggers map when episodes feel random to the client.
Avoid as a first-session page during acute activation — orient and resource first, then work a specific episode.

How to use it

Separate the two kinds
Read the two cards. Most clients recognise the imageless version immediately, and that recognition is itself the intervention.

Choose a recent, small episode
Recent beats significant. Record roles only — 'a manager', 'a partner' — never names.

Find the actual trigger
Usually quiet and relational: tone, silence, being corrected, being kept waiting, someone's disappointment.

Rate intensity and felt age
Peak 0–10, then roughly how old they felt inside. A large gap between felt age and actual age is the clearest marker.

Catch the conclusion
What they decided about themselves mid-flashback. This is the belief that maintains the shame afterwards.

Write the correction
What is true about now — place, age, exits, choices — and one sentence short enough to be usable while activated.

Small relational cues: a shift in tone, a silence, being corrected, being left waiting, someone's disappointment. Because the cues are quiet, the collapse feels random until the triggers are mapped and the shared theme becomes visible.

How do you stop an emotional flashback?+

Bottom-up first. Name it, orient to room, year and body, lengthen the exhale, add movement if activation is high, comfort rather than reason, then re-enter with one small ordinary task and postpone decisions.
