Veteran Transition to Civilian Life Worksheet
Structure, purpose, belonging and identity, rebuilt deliberately

Transition distress is often described as depression when it is closer to a loss of structure, purpose and belonging at once. This page names what was lost and what has to be rebuilt deliberately.
Clear day, clear standards, someone else holding the plan.
Work that obviously mattered, with consequences attached.
People who understood without being told, and who could be relied on.
A known role, and a known way of being seen.
- Civilian work feels aimless or slow
- No one here knows what I did, and explaining is worse than silence
- Small problems get treated as emergencies by people around me
- I cannot switch off the scanning, and it looks strange here
- Drinking, driving or spending is filling the gap
- Asking for help still reads as failure
Purpose before mood
Waiting for motivation to return before rebuilding structure inverts the order. Structure and belonging usually move first, and mood follows them.
