Container Exercise

A place to put what you can't carry right now

TherapistAssist logo

Not everything can be processed right now. The container is a place to set things down so you can drive, work, sleep, parent — without pretending they aren't there.

My container

Describe it. Material, size, color, closure. Vault, chest, locker, treasure box — your call.

1
Build the container

What is it made of? How big? How does it close? Who holds the key?

2
Notice what's too much

An image, a memory, a worry, a body sensation. Don't go into it — just name that it's there.

3
Place it inside

Imagine placing the too-much in the container. Don't push. Just set it down.

4
Close it

Lid, lock, seal, padlock. Test that it's secure. You can come back to it later.

5
Note when you'll return

‘In session on Tuesday.’ ‘Tomorrow morning with my journal.’ This is postponement, not denial.

6
Take three slow breaths

Notice the room. Notice the floor. Notice the time.

When I'll come back to it

"You are not avoiding. You are choosing when."
