What is purity culture?

Purity culture is a set of religious teachings, common in some evangelical communities in the 1990s–2000s, that framed sexual purity as central to worth — often through fear, shame and modesty rules. Effects can include sexual shame, anxiety or pain during intimacy, body monitoring and difficulty voicing needs, even after beliefs change.

Purity Culture Recovery Worksheet

Inherited messages vs chosen values

TherapistAssist logo

Purity culture taught many people that bodies, desire, and sexuality are dangerous or shameful — often with fear-based messages that last well after the beliefs change. This worksheet separates the inherited messages from the values you choose now.

Messages I absorbed
Message
Who taught it
How it shows up now
Where shame shows up
  • Guilt or panic around desire, even in consensual relationships
  • Feeling 'used' or less worthy because of past experiences
  • Disconnection from my body, pain, or numbness during intimacy
  • Body monitoring — clothing, shape, being 'a stumbling block'
  • Difficulty saying what I want or don't want
Values I'm choosing for my body and relationships
Consent, respect, pleasure, safety, faith on my own terms
One small, kind step this week

Go at the body's pace

Shame often lives in the body before it changes in the mind. Slow, consensual, curious steps tend to help more than forcing new beliefs. Pain during sex is worth raising with a medical provider.

About this worksheet

This worksheet helps clients separate what they were taught about bodies and sexuality from what they choose now. It logs specific messages and who taught them, names where shame shows up, and invites values-based choices around consent, pleasure, safety and faith. It moves at the body's pace and suggests raising pain during sex with a medical provider. Works in individual and couples therapy and alongside the religious guilt and shame worksheet.

When to use it

  • Sexual shame or anxiety after religious teaching.
  • Couples where one or both partners grew up in purity culture.
  • Body image work tied to modesty messages.
  • Refer for medical review if there is sexual pain.
