What is faith deconstruction?

Faith deconstruction is the process of examining beliefs you were raised with — sometimes leading to deeper faith, a different tradition, no religion, or somewhere still forming. It often brings grief, fear of losing family or community, and relief at the same time.

Faith Deconstruction Journal Prompts

No deadline, no right ending

TherapistAssist logo

Deconstructing faith can feel lonely, frightening, or freeing — often all three. These journal prompts support the process without pushing toward any particular outcome.

Where I am
What started the questions? What am I afraid would happen if I keep asking?
What I want to keep
Practices, values, people, music, rituals that still feel alive
What I'm grieving
Certainty, community, identity, relationships, the future I was promised
Who I can be honest with
And what I'm not ready to share yet
One question I'm letting stay open

No deadline, no right ending

People land in many places: deeper faith, a different tradition, no religion, or somewhere still forming. Steadiness matters more than speed.

About this worksheet

These prompts support deconstruction without steering toward any outcome. Clients write about what started their questions and what they fear, what still feels alive, what they're grieving, who is safe to be honest with, and which question they're letting stay open. Pair with the Deconstruction Map for a belief inventory, or with the Leaving a Religious Community worksheet if the process is leading out.
