Orienting during difficult conversations — the practice of noticing the room, the other person's face, your own body — keeps you in ventral vagal instead of dropping into defense.
Mid-conversation micro-orienting
- Feet on floor — feel the contact
- Slow scan the room with your eyes
- Notice the other person's face as a face
- One slow exhale
- Return to speaking from ventral
