Orienting in Relationships

Staying ventral during hard conversations

TherapistAssist logo

Orienting during difficult conversations — the practice of noticing the room, the other person's face, your own body — keeps you in ventral vagal instead of dropping into defense.

Mid-conversation micro-orienting
  • Feet on floor — feel the contact
  • Slow scan the room with your eyes
  • Notice the other person's face as a face
  • One slow exhale
  • Return to speaking from ventral
