Dual Process Model Worksheet

Oscillate between loss and restoration

TherapistAssist logo

Stroebe & Schut's Dual Process Model says healthy grief oscillates between loss-oriented moments (feeling the pain, remembering) and restoration-oriented moments (managing life, taking on new roles). Both are needed. Getting stuck on either side is where trouble starts.

Loss-oriented time this week
When and how I let myself grieve
Restoration-oriented time this week
Where I re-engaged with life, new tasks, new roles
Which side am I over-weighting?

Oscillation is the treatment

Grief that only goes into pain becomes depression. Grief that only goes into busy becomes delayed. Oscillating between both is the actual work.
