About this worksheet

A structured seven-day gratitude journal. The research effect (Emmons, Seligman) is driven by specificity, not repetition — 'the way my dog leaned against my leg this morning' does more than 'I'm grateful for my dog'. Four columns per day: something specific noticed, why it mattered, and who (initials only). Ends with the entry that surprised the client most and what that surprise says about what they actually care about. The exercise works best when done at the same time each day (many clients pick bedtime) and when the entries are allowed to be small — a specific small thing beats a general large thing every time.

When to use it

  • Depression adjunct — pairs with behavioral activation.
  • Anxiety — reorients attention off threat.
  • Couples work — the appreciation column of Gottman's rebuild.
  • Positive psychology protocols.
  • As a standing bedtime practice for maintenance.

How to use it

  1. 1
    Specific beats general

'I'm grateful for my health' does almost nothing. 'The way my knees didn't hurt on the walk this morning' does the work.

  2. 2
    About people, most days

The mood effect is larger when at least half the entries involve another person. Not required — noted as pattern.

  3. 3
Why it mattered is the load-bearing column

Naming why makes the noticing durable. Without it, the entry is a list, not a practice.

  4. 4
    Same time daily

Bedtime works for most; morning works for some. Consistency matters more than which time.

Frequently asked questions

Doesn't gratitude journaling just paper over problems?+

Done poorly, yes. Done specifically and with 'why', it retrains attention without denying difficulty. The two hold together.

Is a seven-day journal enough?+

It is a starting dose. The effect grows with sustained practice — many clients move to a bedtime page in a regular notebook after the first week.
