Abreaction Containment

Bringing the adult self back online

TherapistAssist logo

When a younger ego state floods with affect (abreaction), the priority is containment — bringing the adult self online and returning the part to a safe internal space until it can be met at pace.

Signs of abreaction
  • Sudden shift in voice / posture
  • Time distortion (feels 'then' not 'now')
  • Loss of adult perspective
  • Physical shaking, curled body
  • Cannot orient to room
Containment protocol
  • Name it: 'A young part is here'
  • Adult self speaks — feet on floor, name three things in the room
  • Reassure the young part it's safe now
  • Return the part to its safe place in the inner world
  • Ground the adult before ending
