Family-Focused Bipolar Psychoeducation
Expressed emotion changes relapse risk

Family-focused therapy is one of the best-evidenced bipolar interventions we have. This sheet is for family members — because what you say and how you say it directly changes relapse risk.
What helps
- Low expressed emotion — critical, hostile, over-involved comments raise relapse risk
- Recognizing episodes as illness, not character
- Knowing the prodrome — being a second set of eyes
- Protecting sleep and rhythm together
- Being a co-holder of the safety plan
What doesn't help
"Just try harder." Enabling non-adherence. Taking hypomanic decisions personally. Isolation. Silence about the diagnosis.
Our shared plan
What we agreed I'll do at first signs of an episode
You're on the team
Family involvement done well is not intrusion — it's evidence-based treatment.
