About this worksheet
Attachment style is not a diagnosis; it is a learned strategy for handling closeness when stress rises. This is a self-reflection, not a scored quiz. Clients mark which patterns fit under relational stress — reach more (anxious), pull away (avoidant), swing between the two (disorganized), or stay open and name what's needed (earned-secure). They then name a recent moment that shows the pattern, surface the early message their system got about closeness, name what they want closeness to mean now, and pick one small move toward earned-secure this week. The reframe running through the whole sheet: earned-secure is not a personality trait, it's a set of practiced moves. Every time the client names a need instead of protesting it, every time they stay instead of fleeing, the pattern edits.
When to use it
- Couples therapy — often used with both partners in parallel.
- Attachment-focused individual therapy after the first few sessions.
- Adult children of emotionally immature or narcissistic parents.
- Dating patterns and repeated relational themes.
How to use it
- 1
Mark under stress, not on average
Attachment strategies are stress responses. On a calm day, most people can look secure. The stress condition is the diagnostic.
- 2
Name a specific recent moment
'I texted five times when he didn't reply' is workable material. 'I have anxious attachment' is not.
- 3
Surface the early message
'Closeness means ___' — the sentence the client's system learned. This is not blame, it's origin.
- 4
One small move toward earned-secure
Name a need out loud, ask for reassurance rather than test for it, stay in the room instead of leaving. Small and specific.
Frequently asked questions
Is this a diagnostic tool?+
No — it's a reflection. Adult attachment is a continuous rather than categorical construct in the research literature, and self-report has known limitations. Use as a starting point for a conversation.
Can attachment style change?+
Yes. Earned secure attachment is well-documented in adults, developed through therapy, secure relationships, and deliberate practice of a small set of moves.
Is this worksheet free?+
