About this worksheet
An adult-facing anger management worksheet that treats anger as information about a violated value, an unmet need, or a soft feeling underneath — not as a problem to suppress. Sections: what happened (facts only); body warning signs (jaw, chest, breath, heat); the soft feeling under the anger (hurt, scared, dismissed, ashamed); the story the mind wrote about why this happened; anger peak on a 0–10 scale; what the client actually did in the moment (recorded without judgment); what they want to do differently next time the same trigger fires; and one repair, if any, that is available. Anger management is not anger elimination. The worksheet is designed to build the client's ability to notice the runway, choose the response, and repair when the response wasn't the one they wanted.
When to use it
- Court-mandated and voluntary anger management programs.
- Couples therapy where anger is a repeating pattern.
- Workplace anger and road rage.
- Parenting outbursts and post-outburst repair work.
- As adjunct to trauma-focused work where anger is the safer emotion.
How to use it
- 1
The soft feeling is the point
Most anger has a hurt or fear underneath. Naming it privately does more to reduce the outbursts than any breathing technique.
- 2
Record without judgment
'What I did' is diagnostic, not confessional. If the sheet becomes self-attack, the client stops using it.
- 3
Repair is separate from prevention
The 'what I want to do differently' row is prevention. Repair is what makes the current damage smaller — usually a specific acknowledgment, not a global apology.
- 4
Trigger patterns emerge across sheets
Three or four of these sheets in a row will show the same trigger, same soft feeling. The pattern is the intervention.
