Trigger Mapper

Map a recurring activation — cue, body, part, behavior, cost, Self-led plan

A structured trigger map. Walk a recurring activation through the full cycle — cue, body, part, story, behavior, cost — then design the Self-led alternative the client will rehearse. Pairs with the Parts Mapper.

A structured trigger map for parts-aware clinicians

Trigger Mapper is a free trigger mapping worksheet for therapists. Take a recurring activation and walk it through the full cycle — cue, body sensation, activated part, internal story, behavior, cost — then design the Self-led alternative the client will rehearse between sessions.

What is a trigger?

A trigger is any present-moment cue — external or internal — that reactivates a protective response anchored in an earlier experience. In parts language, the trigger blends a protector with Self so quickly that the client experiences the part's reaction as their own choice. Mapping the cycle separates the cue from the part from the behavior, which is the first step toward Self-leadership.

Frequently asked questions

What is a trigger map in therapy?
A trigger map walks a recurring activation through its full cycle — external cue, body response, activated part or belief, behavior, and cost — so the client can see the sequence instead of being inside it. In IFS, the map ends with the Self-led alternative: what the same moment would look like if Self led the response instead of the part.
How is a trigger map different from a thought record?
A thought record stops at the cognition; a trigger map adds the body cue (where the activation actually starts), the part who carries the response, and the relational origin of the pattern. It is parts-aware rather than purely cognitive.
Can I use this with non-IFS clients?
Yes. The structure — cue, body, story, behavior, cost, alternative — is compatible with CBT, somatic, and trauma-informed work. The part-naming step is optional and uses everyday language.
How is this different from the Parts Mapper?
The Parts Mapper diagrams the whole inner system. The Trigger Mapper zooms into one recurring activation and traces its full cycle. Most clinicians use both — Parts Mapper to see the system, Trigger Mapper to work a specific moment.
