Weight Set-Point & Body Respect

Weight-neutral psychoeducation plus a values clarification

Bodies have a genetically influenced range — the set-point range — that they defend through hunger, satiety, metabolic adaptation, and thoughts about food. Long-term suppression of weight below that range produces the symptoms of restriction (preoccupation, rigidity, binge urges) regardless of starting body size. Body respect is not the same as body love; it's a clinical stance.

What I was taught about weight

From family, medicine, fitness culture, social media. What was presented as fact?

Signs my body is being suppressed below its range

Cold all the time, constant food thoughts, low libido, hair loss, irregular / absent periods, sleep disruption, rigid food rules, irritability, binge urges.

What my body has done well across its size history

Weight-neutral values — what would a respected body get?

Adequate food. Rest. Movement that doesn't punish. Clothes that fit today's body. Medical care that treats the actual symptom instead of recommending weight loss. Not being talked about.

The fear underneath

What I'm afraid will happen if my body settles where it wants to settle. Who taught me to be afraid of that?

One body-respecting commitment I can keep regardless of the number on the scale
