About this worksheet
The trauma timeline is a structured lifespan map of the client's traumatic and near-traumatic events, plotted with age, context, protective factors present or absent, and any current symptom the client links back to it. It's used across EMDR target sequencing, CPT case conceptualization, IFS legacy-burden mapping, and standard trauma-focused CBT — anywhere the treatment plan depends on knowing what happened, when, and to whom. This worksheet is deliberately spare: a horizontal timeline the client fills in with brief labels, then rates on distress and vividness, without narrative unpacking. The unpacking happens in session with the clinician holding the frame. Use only after stabilization work is in place; a timeline generated before window-of-tolerance capacity is built can flood the client and set treatment back. Print two copies — one for the clinician, one for the client to hold.
When to use it
- Early trauma case conceptualization, once stabilization and window-of-tolerance work are established.
- EMDR target sequence planning — the timeline feeds directly into the target list.
- CPT and TF-CBT case conceptualization; IFS legacy-burden mapping.
- Not for acute crisis, active dissociation, or clients without a reliable grounding skill in place.
How to use it
- 1
Explain the frame first
Timeline is a map, not a processing exercise. Client stays out of the water this session — we're drawing the shoreline.
- 2
Fill in chronologically, briefly
Age, one-line label, who was present or absent. No detail beyond what the client can write without activation.
- 3
Rate distress and vividness
0–10 for each event on current distress and how vivid the memory feels today. These ratings guide sequencing.
- 4
Note protective factors
Safe adult, escape route, help arriving — protective factors present or absent shape the meaning the client made.
- 5
Close with orienting
Full grounding sequence at the end, no exceptions. Client leaves session in the window.
Frequently asked questions
What is a trauma timeline?+
A structured lifespan map of a client's traumatic events, plotted by age with brief labels, distress ratings, and protective factors. Used for case conceptualization in EMDR, CPT, TF-CBT, and IFS.
Is a trauma timeline safe to do in one session?+
Only after stabilization work is established. A timeline drawn before the client has reliable grounding and window-of-tolerance skills can flood them and set treatment back. Sequence carefully.
How is the timeline different from a trauma narrative?+
The timeline is a map — brief labels, ratings, no story. The narrative is the processing work that comes after — full account, in-session, with the clinician holding the container. Different tools for different phases.
Do I need to complete the whole timeline in one session?+
Rarely. Most clients need two or three sessions to build it out, with grounding at the end of each. Rushing the timeline is a common mistake.
