Substance Use + Eating Disorder — Dual-Dx Map

Treat both, or treat neither

TherapistAssist logo

Up to 50% of ED clients meet criteria for a substance use disorder at some point. The two often trade off — one gets quiet as the other gets louder — and treatment plans have to hold both. This page maps the pattern and the plan.

My pattern
Substances used (alcohol, cannabis, stimulants, opioids, other)
When did each start relative to my ED?
Do they trade off? Describe
Do I use to restrict, purge, binge, tolerate a meal, or numb after?
Weekly log
Day
Substance / amount
ED behaviors that day
What I was avoiding
What integrated treatment would look like
What happens if I stop one — do I predict the other will surge?

Treat both, or treat neither

A recovery plan that ignores the other substance almost always fails. Integrated care — not sequential — is what holds. Loop your ED and substance providers together, on purpose.
