Body Functionality Appreciation
The middle path when 'love your body' is impossible and hate is the default

A middle path between 'love your body' (often impossible in ED recovery) and 'hate your body' (the maintaining default) is body functionalityappreciation — noticing what the body does, not how it looks. Research shows it reliably lowers body dissatisfaction without demanding positive body evaluation.
What my body did today (functions, not appearance)
- Senses — what I saw, heard, tasted, smelled, felt
- Movement — walking, reaching, carrying, dancing, resting
- Communication — speaking, laughing, hugging, crying, listening
- Health & self-care — digesting, healing, sleeping, breathing
- Creativity — making, playing an instrument, cooking, writing
- Connection — holding a child, being close to a partner, being with a pet

One thing my body did for me today
How I felt about my body afterward
What I'd lose access to if my body was smaller in the way the ED wants
What functions I want to protect / grow in recovery
Bodies aren't ornaments
You don't have to love your reflection to appreciate the body that lived a day for you. Functionality appreciation is a livable middle ground when body positivity feels dishonest.
